Most parents understand the never-ending desires of children to have the newest doll or toy. But it begs the question, what happens to the old playthings?
A talented printmaker and sculptor, Freya Jobbins works with plastic, which she describes as 'pre-loved', creating humanoid works of art. She uses pieces from discarded Barbie dolls and figures to create heads that have basic human features with a few extras.
There are dozens of miniature arms and hands stemming from the top of heads. Other limbs make appearances around the facial features.
Some find the artworks unnerving, others regard them as funny, but one thing is certain: there is no shortage of details.
Jobbins states "My work explores the relationship between consumerist fetishism and the emerging recycling culture within the visual arts. Due to our society's overspending on children's plastic toys, especially dolls, the materials for my assemblages are very accessible."
